Dr. Fernando Branco, Medical Director. Dr. Branco was literally “handpicked” to take on his new role. “Dr. Rosomoff and I searched many years for someone who could take over this position,” said Renee Rosomoff, RCPC Programs Director. “We knew after a few meetings with Dr. Branco, and learning of his qualifications and philosophies, his previous support of our program, and most especially his dedication to quality care, he was the person to follow in Dr. Rosomoff’s footsteps.
Dr. Branco has extensive experience with the diagnosis and treatment of chronic pain. Born in Brazil, he attended medical school there and completed a residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at ABBR (Brazilian Association of Rehabilitation) in Rio de Janeiro. He also holds a master’s degree in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation from the Carlos Chagas Foundation. After coming to the United States, Dr. Branco completed a second residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the University of Kentucky. There he also served as Chief Resident and was recognized for his exceptional research. He was the recipient of the David L. Cowen Award for outstanding performance. He was chosen to participate in the Research Enrichment Program for Physiatrists at the University of Missouri. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Dr. Branco is also Board Certified in Pain Medicine, and is a member of the American Academy of Pain Medicine as well as the American Pain Society. He brings a great deal of experience to the Center, not only from his extensive work in private practice--most recently as Director of a multidisciplinary pain program in South Florida--but also as an academician. Dr. Branco was Coordinator of the Sports Medicine Department at the prestigious Minnesota School of Health Sciences. He served as Assistant Professor of Clinical Rehabilitation Medicine in the Rehabilitation Department at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, where he worked closely with physicians from many departments and disciplines. He has authored articles and book chapters on medical genetics, memory and learning, exercise physiology, and sexual dysfunction in spinal cord injury.
“I feel as if I have been preparing for this position all my life,” says Dr. Branco. “I had known Dr. Rosomoff for years and, of course, knew about this outstanding Program. I share the same philosophy about the causes and treatment of chronic pain as Dr. Rosomoff. It was always my dream to be associated with the RCPC. Dr. Rosomoff left big shoes to fill, but I believe he is still here with us. With the experience of this incredible multidisciplinary team, and the ongoing leadership of Renee Rosomoff, I know we can continue this Program on its path of excellence.”
